Last Friday, like probably every one of you reading this, I was eager to press play when the new Battle for Alderaan Highlight Video posted on the official SWTOR website. Before I pressed play, however, I reread the title. Noticing the word highlight, I immediately thought about the Alderaan content from E3, and figured the video would include much of the same content. Did I get all worked up at the thought that BioWare would repackage content they have already shown? No. Why, you may ask? There are two reasons. One, I like any and all content that BioWare decides to share with us. I’m stoked for the game, but unless I get a beta invite or figure out how to get that stupid money tree in my backyard to grow, getting me to Comic-Con, I’ll take what I can get. Two, I understand that they don’t actually have to give us anything at all. My parents raised me to be grateful for what I have, so I’m attempting to travel down the patience route.
Maybe I had an little more time on my hands last week, but I spent some of it reading through pages, and pages of comments about the Alderaan Video. There was a common theme to many of the more ‘energetic’ posts. As I write this, there are 175 pages of responses. Granted I didn’t go through that many, mostly because it all starts to run together after about 15 pages. For example:
The worst update yet. Everyone that I know following the game has seen the E3 footage many times. I hope BioWare listens to the public outcry of “Foul” and quickly puts together another update. I have to say that I expect more from such a great company.
Fail
So wait, your showing us what we’ve already seen through countless E3 videos?
I don’t want more videos, I want the game ffs!
The only way to experience it is by playing the game…. NO **** SHERLOCK!!! Still waiting!!!
Okay, the last one I can sort of understand. Dallas Dickinson did say the only way to experience it is by playing the game. I half hoped (if that’s possible) that he would give just me personally, a way to do just that. Sadly, he smiled and signed off.
Don’t get me wrong here, there were plenty of posts praising BioWare, and thanking them for giving us anything at all. Which brings me to my main point. Why do we expect so much, and why does the SWTOR community feel so entitled? I get the fact that many of these posts are just waiting for a release date frustrations. I’ve admitted before that patience isn’t my strongest attribute, but is yelling anonymously about a pretty darn cool video on an open forum, going to make BioWare feel bad enough to say: “Okay, I’m sorry we upset you with our video, the release date is ____.” Doubtful. Heck, I’m at the point now, where I go back and re-watch walkthroughs, and game trailers that I haven’t seen in awhile, because it feels sort of fresh after some time has passed. For me, it makes more sense than yelling into cyberspace. Cyberspace is huge and people don’t really respond often enough for my taste.
Speaking of responses from the internet, I noticed yet another complaint that is ravaging the official forums. There are a bunch of ‘fans’ complaining that BioWare needs to communicate with the community better. Really? Check out this OP from veryalien:
I’m just as surprised to see this as anyone else who has noticed.
Through the beta program Bioware has begun alienating some of its user base. I think this effect started gradually. First, the game slowly revealed itself, and any features we didn’t like like space combat were quietly pushed through without any kind of concession from Bioware.
Then as the game started to reach completion we had the whole release date debacle. Some of Bioware employee responses to the release date borderline on aggressive. The community reps “quarantine” any discussion of it to its own thread. I’ve seen SRs responses on twitter almost sound fed up with people asking.
Of course the marketing machine very happily chugs along with announcements of events and other hype. Hype, which I feel, is needed less and less of at this stage.
Then we have the beta invites. Only a small percentage of the million+ users will be invited to testing. We’ve been told no open beta. There has been no change in this stance, and I don’t think we will see an open beta where most of the people signed up will get a chance to play.
I know this sounds like QQ, and it is. What many of us actually want from EA/Bioware (release date, beta invites, timeline videos) aren’t being addressed. Instead we’re getting more hype and events most of us will probably not attend.
Bioware, I hope you won’t remain like this after launch. Please communicate to your communities needs. That’s the really worrisome part. After launch you’ll continue to communicate in ways we don’t actually need.
So, really this person is just upset that they didn’t get invited to the beta. I want in too, but who am I to tell BioWare who to invite and who to exclude? It’s not my place. I try to survive on the small morsels they feed us on Wednesdays, Fridays, and any other info that comes from conventions etc. Honestly, it’s a whole heck of a lot more than other games do for their communities.
As far as release date frustration, I thought of a decent example. Let’s say, you are super excited to take your kids to Disney World, and you live in California. You plan your trip for November, but it’s January when you book it. What can you do to when your kids demand to go now? You know you have to wait until November, so you decide to show them Disney films, pick them up a couple of toys, buy them special Disney World clothes with their favorite princess on front etc. But, can you just pop on over to Disney World now because they are being ridiculously impatient? Of course not. BioWare will give us the date when they can, until then, we need to try to enjoy the little bits of awesomeness that they send us between now and then.
Before I ask the TORpublic to respond, I want you to see Georg Zoeller’s response to the above thread:
QFT…
Well, the way I like to phrase it is this:
Asking questions is one thing… being willing to accept the answers is another.
We’re perfectly willing to communicate with you guys, often on a daily basis (as time permits). What we are unable to do is to give everyone the answers they want to hear. We can commit to answering truthfully… but we can’t promise you that you like the answers, that is entirely up to you.
It’s easy to summarize the current problem.
Q: When do you release
A: We plan to release in 2011Q: When do you release exactly?
A: We plan to release in 2011Q: Surely you must have more precise plans?
A: We plan on 2011. We’re not precise for [number of reasons]Q: I think those reasons are not valid. When do you release?
A: We plan to release in 2011The answers are there. The communication is there. It’s just that people don’t like the answers. They have perfectly fine reasons to dislike the answers (“I planned to plan a vacation around release, etc.”). We’re totally understanding of it… but, sadly, none of the people you interact with on these Forums have any power to change those answers to something you like.
Finally, to the original poster, veryalien
If you accuse someone of calling people stupid, please back it up with a quote. It’ll help for context. For reference, I never did. Damion wrote, month ago, a post with the words ‘players’ and ‘stupid’ in it. However did not call the community stupid. He made a tongue in cheek comment about how ‘the other players’ are always stupid when it comes to friendly fire. You chose to take that out of context and attribute it to me. I dislike that, but I take that this was a honest mistake.
Well, TORWarsfolk, I’m curious where you stand on this issue? Are you one of the fans who demands brand-spanking, never-before-seen content every Fan Friday? Are you just happy to get anything at all a few times a week from BioWare? What about the release date drama? Is your patience wearing thin? Are you planning to flame my fanboyishlike opinions? Let us know where you stand, and I’ll see you on SWTOR.com tomorrow, repeatedly pressing F5 right along with you.

The only system I see maybe having a flaw would be the invite system. Sure I say this hoping I get in, but when I and several friends have been waiting for this and others friends just recently signed up and get in…that is something that aggrevates people in thinking that there wwas no reason in starting invites so long ago.
I understand the importance of holding back information to keep the hype machine fueled up for the long road ahead. SO… just give me a beta invite and ill stop asking for more info!!!
“NO NEW UPDATES UNTIL RELEASE!” (IMO) – If the community wants to complain then take it away. This Friday and the next until people get it though there heads that Bioware is doing “US” a favor by giving us these updates and it’s not our right to demand anything from them. They are working very hard to get this out and working for us and I think that US as a community should be thankful and not demanding. Now there are others who think Bioware owes them something well to them I have to say SORRY. Bioware owes you NOTHING!!
Ok, I agree 100 percent with you. But I think the reason we feel like we have a lack of communication and are overall frustrated over the date is because they said last summer that the game would launch in Spring/April/(I think I recall someone on staff saying April 1st). Since then, they have not addressed the issue at all. That is the problem.
I just wish they’d say, hey guys, I know we said April 2011, but we got behind and we’re sorry.
I feel good about a 2011 release as an answer, but It’d make me feel better and make this game release feel more consistent if they’d address the April thing instead of acting like it never happened. Right now, I just feel like there’s a good chance the game may not come out in 2011. Because it didn’t come out when they said it was supposed to last time.
You can’t feel abused because of the first failed release target – they did address the issue at the time by essentially saying ‘the game isn’t ready yet’, what more do you want to hear? If they list any more negatives people would simply twist it causing a bigger scandal.
The fact it got delayed once is a good sign, it means the PR and so on don’t want to risk another negative view like that – making it more and more likely to be released this year. It’s pretty clear EA and BioWare are keen PR men, and they updates make the whole game in the spotlight every week – they probably don’t want to let people down a second time, if they even let them down the first time.
I see what you’re saying, but you can’t tell me you’d be dissappointed if it gets pushed to 2012… Right?
you wouldn’t be*
Truthfully i expected to be playing TOR by now when last christmas they said ‘Spring Release’. And i was little disappointed, but it gave me the summer to write my university dissertation – so i can write that now instead of trying to write it whilst thinking about playing TOR :p
But yes i would be disappointed if it was pushed back to 2012, but i really can’t see that happening. And should it be pushed back to 2012, it would still be a very early 2012 release – don’t forget Mass Effect 3 has been scheduled at that time aswel, so it’s internal and external pressure to get the game out
just for clarification and understanding, they said their target window was spring 2011. i don’t remember ever reading from a dev that release was april 1st. that i believe was a forum poster, once again speculating, and people taking that as gospel.
when they knew they weren’t going to release in spring 2011 they did address it. and they gave a reason why: the game wasn’t ready. they basically did what you said you wished they did. and they told us at that time they expect the game to release before the end of 2011. and since then they have said numerous times release will be the 2nd half of 2011.
please, read the dev tracker. they really have and do continue to communicate a lot of information to us on a daily basis. you can even go all the way back to where they addressed the spring target window not being met. i don’t remember the exact date, but for some reason i believe it was in Feb.
I tend to have both opinions. Whilst i cherish any information they submit (and i too surf back through the older videos just because it’s nice to see the progression and it does feel ‘fresh’), sometimes the friday updates can be a little lack luster. As in, the alderaan video for example, i was hoping for something equivalent to the taral V walkthrough, or atleast half it’s length. Even if it was just a longer dialogue scene with the princess, i’d of still loved to of seen it. Not that i’m suggesting that i’m crying for a release date – i accept 2011 is practical time line for them, and i don’t quite understand why the community is still up in arms about why the release date is unspecific, they should be celebrating it hasn’t been pushed back to 2012, especially since the BW Team is firmly stating 2011 release is on track.
I dont like how BioWare even give these trolls attention…
I look forward to every friday updated, and they manage to keep the updates constant, they haven’t missed a single one as far as i can remember. And Bioware engage with the community more than any other company. I am of the opinion tha anybody who complains about being given a good quality community interation and a steady stream of info, should be instantly banned from the internet for being a jerk.
It’s more frustration than them being idiots – although the afore mentioned can inflict the latter on a person :p And also i guess they keep getting information that they seemingly don’t care about (it’s info about the game, how could they not care about that?), which makes them rage even more. It goes without saying that his game comes with huge expectations – and frankly it’s the stuff made of dreams, there has been some good SW games – but this really looks like a game changer for the genre and gaming industry, so it’s become a beacon for many people, and naturally they rage when they feel they’re being ignored even when that isn’t the case. I guess most are just trolls /shrug
I have no complaints towards the updates. I missed my chance to see E3 on Spike/G4 so I appreciated that they shared that footage. Yeah, its all hype, but if they didn’t get me hyped I wouldn’t be looking forward to getting the game. The game keeps looking more and more enticing with each update.
I am personally happy with anything we get from Bioware. I believe they are doing an amazing job with the game and couldn’t be happier. Would I like a beta invite? You bet your biscuits I would. Would I like to see a release date? Absofreakinglutely. Will I wine like a baby on the forums cause I don’t have either of these things? Never. Bioware gives us tons of info and are always there answering the question we have whether we like what they have to say or not.
I’m not upset about beta invites. There’s millions of fans and you can’t invite all of them. You would be playing an incomplete game anyway.
I’m not frustrated about a lack of a specific release date; they gave us an answer and I’m happy that they gave an answer at all. I’m just really stoked for the game and can’t wait. Bioware is excited about the game too. You can see it their faces and how they talk about it. If they weren’t, we wouldn’t be getting weekly updates at all.
The community has been spoiled, particularly this past month with great Friday updates and E3. That being said, last week’s update seemed a bit underwhelming. Yet its quite understandable. Bioware is attending several events over the summer. With the game coming out fairly soon, it would make sense that they would save release of new content for the next show, expo, etc. If the game comes out Black Friday (just throwing out a guess there), that’s 21 Friday updates from now including tomorrow. That’s 21 new things to give the public until the game releases… and that’s a lot. Even 12 would be a lot.
The game will come out before you know it. Have patience folks. Lest you be tempted by the Dark Side.
The TOR community scares me sometimes. I’m living in anticipation for this game as much as anybody, but the sheer sense of entitlement embodied by so many fans is pretty grotesque. I’m fine with whatever update they toss our way each Friday and I’ve made peace with the fact that I’ll play this game whenever it’s ready. I really don’t understand the anger.
I absolutely agree.
The week after E3, they’re exhausted. I expected a somewhat thin update.
Personally, I will wait as long as it takes for the game to release. I’d much rather have the game be polished and near-perfect, than some half-finished exercise in frustration. Though it’s hard to wait, we are all better off in the long run, IMO.
I love getting their updates, sure when they are thin it is somewhat disappointing having waited all week for it, but that just makes me want the next weeks more. I love getting all the info I can about the game, hell I rewatch the walkthroughs and videos, along with trailers cuz they are awesome.
On one hand, people are selective with what they choose to hear when given information and often cannot tell the difference between expectations fabricated in their own minds and actual statements made e.g. that BW planned on making a revolutionary or heavily innovative MMO.
On the other hand, BW has stoked up fires of hype through a haphazard PR campaign that is run by developers who utterly failed to anticipate the interest there would be in their product and have combined that with a policy of “we can’t talk about that yet” for long periods leaving nothing but speculation to fill the void and the forums are in part, a consequence of that.
There should have been a team of PR people hired to control the release of information and it should not have been hyped so heavily so long before launch which would have given them breathing room when the target window was inevitably missed.
I have got it in my head it will be a november release (they wouln’t push it back more then that if its a 2011 release)
if it releases before that great if not i will be to busy playing assassin’s creed revelations to care
Sadly the sense of entitlement to demand developers release specific information is not uncommon these days. Bungie (creators of the Halo franchise), EA Sports (creaters of NHL, Madden franchise titles), Valve (Half-Life, Portal), and many more developers all interact with their respective communities, and each community has individuals therein that demand specific information when and how they want it – never satisfied with any answer that they don’t want to hear. Some people fail to realize that it is not a right for gamers to know everything about the development (either pre or post release) of the games they enjoy. It is not a right that the developers be at their beck and call 24/7 to answer their questions and give them exactly what these individuals ask. I suppose that this is the downside to the double-sided coin of focused interactivity and internet-based relationship that developers have with the people that play and anticipate their work so much… Long gone are the days of sporadic monthly magazine articles with “inside scoops” on the latest games in development where you’d hear a few tidbits and then BAM… game released a few years later to the joy of the few gamers anticipating it but only knowing the basics.
Suffice it to say, I am of the mind that we are lucky to get any information at all from developers who so regularly take abuse and flack about the projects they devote hundreds and thousands of man hours of their lives to create. They’re not paid to entertain us during the development process – they choose to. They choose to let us know what they plan, the type of worlds they’re creating for us, how they plan to do it, and eventually we all get to share in the finished experience. I’ve loved every bit of media, every screenshot, ever word published by Bioware that let’s me view even the slightest peek at the huge game they’re creating for us to eventually play… when they say we can play it, and when they say its ready to be played.
Developer information and interactivity on the levels that we’re now accustomed to in this modern internet age are still a privilege. It would be nice if everyone showed the respect to that fact and stop acting like spoiled children, but like modern society’s children these days, they want everything their way and they want it yesterday. Personally, I’d hit them all with a used Bantha prod if I could.
This sounds just a rant for releasedate and beta invite.. I dont need it Because I belive in bioware.. But one point ranter has right.. content they are giving us is totally useless.. We dont need anymore the same gameplay footage.. We want to know more about the story or have 20 min video about pvp.. Something new and exiting … And more polls anything that gives us something really new.. Something we all desire.. SOMETHING EVIL!
~~~
I dont say I wouldnt enjoy videos about flaspoints or guesting but.. And I dont say they owe us something or even needs to give anything.. just saying what they are giving isnt what we really want
*cracks knuckles and prepares to make a ludicrously long post*
Well, I have to say that as far as this subject, I’m a bit on the fence.
On one side, I have to side with Bioware. They are spending hours upon hours of each day not only developing the bestest ever mmo for us to play, but they actually take the time to make updates to their TOR website every freakin Friday, which is way more than most other game sites would do. Also they gave us a full course meal (with some dessert) of delicious info on TOR at E3 2011. It’s safe and accurate to say that Bioware busts their proverbial buns to keep us as updated and freshly interested in their game as they possibly can. Unfortunately, they can’t really give us the game or even a proper release date till things are as done as they need to be. Rome wasn’t built in a day. An mmo like TOR is gonna take a lot of work from the devs to complete, as well as a lot of patience from those waiting to play it. And hey, we can be patient when it comes to video games, right? The moderate welcome and success of Duke Nukem Forever is a testament to that fact.
On the OTHER hand (puts Devil’s Advocate hat on) as one of the people waiting for this game I can definately see where the frustration is coming from. First of all, I get the analogy with telling your kids you’re going to Disney World. Yes, it’s true that you can’t go any sooner than you can, so kids will just have to wait as patiently as they can for a few months. However, imagine for a second that you told your children that they’re going to Disney World, saw their eyes light up with delight and happiness, then told them they’d simply have to wait… for six years. I can’t imagine they’d be all too pleased. And then, until that time six years later came, you’d just update your children on the spectacular wonders of Disney World via DVDs that show how magical and fun the place is. I’m sure the kids would point at rides saying “Oooh, I wanna get on that!” and look at the many people walking around in costume and say “Oooh, I get to meet Mickey Mouse!” Then, after they’d already waited for years and they’re foaming at the mouth excited to go to Disney World (not to mention understandably frustrated at having to wait so long to go) you try to “update” them with a DVD you’d already shown them twice before. And you really don’t expect a Vancouver-style riot? Really? For pete’s sake, I’m a grown freakin woman. And in the same situation, you might see my initial reaction on the News. (I heart Disney World. Seriously.) It’s kind of the same situation with those who eagerly await TOR. For them, it’s been like a six year long crotch tease as they’re fed info about the game (in some cases, the same info repeatedly) while they have to wait and just hope against hope they get to play the darn game before they die of old age. And what’s worse, we likely won’t get to experience even a beta! And those very very veeery lucky few who do are made to sign a contract in blood stating they will divulge no info about the game, in any way, shape, or form, to the public under pain of death. So, the only info the rest of us get is the info Bioware decides we should be allowed to have. So understandably a few people in the community are a bit up in arms about it being info that we’ve pretty much already seen/heard/read. To tell you the truth, I almost want to applaud the complainers of the community for the amount of restraint they’re showing. I lol, but it’s true.
Perhaps that is as much Bioware’s fault as it is the community’s though. The community is impatient (after six years, yeah I can see that), but it may be a side effect of Bioware’s decision to allow us all to know about the game so many years before they were finished making it. Perhaps if we had to wait three years instead of six to play it, then we wouldn’t be so antsy. That’s just my theory. Anyway, as I said, I understand both Bioware and the patience-strained TOR community’s POV. But there is a solution to this. To those who are fit to tied about lackluster Friday updates (which there are a few of, come one BW cheerleaders, let’s be serious, not all of them but there are some) then do what I did. TAKE. A. BREAK. I, personally, haven’t even been to the official forums for going on three months now. The hype, waiting, and tension piling up there just got on my nerves. (Plus I just like this site better. Personal preference.) Leave the official website alone. Heck, leave all of them alone for a while if you can and go think about something else. The last thing any of us needs is to get burnt out on an mmo that hasn’t been released yet. Who knows, perhaps the next time you’re ready to pay attention to anything any of the devs or fansites say about the game it will be like two weeks before it releases. Also, one must remember, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I don’t know about you guys, but when I finally start playing the game I don’t want it to be wih an attitude like “Finally, I’m playing this *bleep*-ing game. It better be worth the years I waited to play it.” Bitterness and resentment are never fun, and I don’t want those crappy emotions spoiling my TOR experience.
Nice point, i agree about taking a break – i recently did one the April date kinda failed. And the community can get on your last nerves, especially right now where every idiot is just constantly using caps lock asking for a release date when a time has already been given (2011).
I have been one of those that had waited for this since KOTOR2, so i really am one of those that’s been in this for the very very loooong run. But as for beta, BW (and any other developer) states that a beta invite is to TEST the game, not PLAY it. It isn’t like meet and greet where you get to play the game earlier and become best friends with Daniel Erickson – it’s a serious position and you’re expected to fulfill what you signed up for. So i don’t really understand where the frustration is coming from on that part – not to suggest that i wouldn’t be immensely happy to receive an invite.
As for the whole PR thing, they do have a PR team that’s dedicated, it’s called EA :p And i do get that disney land analogy with the kids being shown pictures etc weekly and then getting increasingly frustrated at not being able to experience it. Arguably it could be suggested that BioWare should simply change the content the of the friday update to satisfy peoples Hunger for the game, especially since it’s now closer to release. They can do this by keeping the friday updates as they are, but also constantly tagging on say like 2-3 minutes of in game footage – or just releasing maxed out graphics screenshots when the updates are a little weak.
I have no issue with Bioware and these things. Forum communities are always less than stellar.
I will say your “vacation to Disneyland” argument is invalid though because you have the actual date you’re going back in Jan. so the entire time the kids at least KNOW when they are going
This is more like if you tell your kids “Hey sometime in 2011 we’re going”
lol I guess you have a point there.
The writer sounds like he’s flat out on the Bioware payroll. Let me be clear I have been an active TOR community member since 2008 and we (the community) hold our tongues on a ton of crap so as not to piss off BW and lose a beta spot, but we are not happy with rehashed crap released on a fan Friday meant to placate us. We want a release date that’s no joke, stop sticking up for asshats when they go after fans… Not Bioware fans… Star Wars fans.
The reason we as a community put so much effort into the boards is simple, we love Star Wars and do not want BW to screw this MMO up. We were told by the way that this was comming out this spring, they missed the target and the heat is getting turned up.
I love how you feel the community is a collective harmony :p The community embodies the spirit of the misinformed. You won’t ‘lose’ a beta spot for speaking your opinion, it’s not like they have a list where they then chalk your name up on it (“Don’t tell him your name Pyke!”).
You claim to be part of the community, guess what – fan friday updates are the community, it is BioWare recognizing their love and time devoted to the project. I fail to see where this annoys those that claim to be part of the community.
Effort into the boards? Using caps lock and churning out the same ill informed opinion is hardly what i’d call constructive effort :p All the confirmation you need to be assured of it being at the very least a good game, is to play other BioWare titles – Mass Effect was a year ago and that’s an amazing game. It’s not like BioWare will suddenly drop in performance.
People need to calm the expletive down. Maybe there are a few out there that won’t be able to play the game if its release late (ie. expecting parents, soldiers about to be deployed, death row inmates etc.) but seriously, I’d rather wait to play the best swtor there is instead of a crappy version now that gets constantly changed in patches cause it isn’t finished.
People act like their whole lives revolve around this video game and it hasn’t even been released yet!
Wait what am I saying, life DOES revolve around swtor! Release! Nao!!!
This is pretty simple. Bioware doesn’t *owe* the community anything. That’s one of the great things about open, voluntary online communities. Come if you like, stay home if you don’t. Some of the attitudes of would-be players out there remind me of a young child who gets it in their head for some reason that they’re going to open presents on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas morning. When Christmas morning arrives, the child may choose to continue to hold on to his poor attitude and ruin the experience for himself, or can be thankful that he and his family are able to experience Christmas at all. I’m thinking Marshall and I were raised in the same zip code – my parents raised me to be grateful for what I have and for what I don’t. Otherwise, we find ourselves in a near-constant state of ignoring all that we have and despising ourselves for what we don’t get or the guy next to us for what he has that we don’t. These types of poor attitudes smack of whiny, entitled children. I would not give every developer this much credit, but let’s remember this is Bioware. They are not perfect, but they also tend not to disappoint. They’ve done a good deal for a lot of us in terms of entertainment and consistently bring excellent, memorable quality to the marketplace. I hope this doesn’t sound like just another fan-boy (I really despise that type of communication and I do my best to avoid it), but people with over-developed senses of entitlement rub me the wrong way, as you can probably tell
[...] Last week I had some fun with community expectations for our beloved Fan Fridays. My main point was that there is a sense of entitlement that comes from the official SWTOR Friday reveals, with a bias toward “give me a release date or I’ll burn the forums down” kind of attitude. Wait all you want, but I don't think he's moving any time soon. [...]
Have a fantastic day!. Do you mind if I quote you on my blog if I link back to your website? play mario games
very good
