On the off chance you are worried about getting jumped in PVP when calling or travelling back to your ship to depart your current location you can now rest easier. Georg “Observer” Zoeller, Principal Lead Combat Designer visited a thread today on the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums with these soothing words:
Hangars are instanced. Spaceports are heavily guarded and frequented by players of friendly faction. There are no decent medical centers for players of the opposite factions around your spaceport and surrounding areas.
This was in response to concerns about griefing in or at your hangar:
We get our spaceships at around level 10 – what if a higher level enemy player finds a lower level enemy player on his ship and just camps there? Where would the lower level player spawn too as if he tries to move his ship he just dies again! – Sentanta
Ultima Online had a similar mechanic where you could pick the lock of people’s houses (or was it an exploit, I forget) and wait around inside until they came back. Of course the concern is lent added weight in SWTOR with the ship being your main method of travelling between the stars. But happily you will be safe to take off and land without IPwnzJoo the Bountyhunter lurking around the bay. As for the hangars being instanced you might argue that was a given considering the possibilities of over-crowding otherwise but I have to share GeekoftheUndead‘s response to that for the hilarity factor:
“Alright, let’s go do a Hoth operation… What do you mean there is nowhere to park on Hoth?” *imagine the entire surface of the planet covered in ships* “Look: That guy is walking to his ship, okay he’s putting groceries in his cargo hold…Get ready to land in his spot… aw he left his ship to go back to the store…” - GeekoftheUndead
Well played I say. As far as I’m concerned I think we need more pure win like this on the forums!

Early on in UO, you could kill people, take their keys, and then pretty much be the new owner of the building. They updated their housing later on in the game so that ownership was more or less permanent and you could keep a friends list that would deny access to anyone not on it, but for the first few years there was pretty much always one exploit or another where you could loot others’ homes or otherwise grief home owners.
It’s strange, I look back on it fondly now, but it was a whole lot of annoying back in the day.
“Look: That guy is walking to his ship, okay he’s putting groceries in his cargo hold”..Classic!
The flipside to this is getting to your ship takes longer than I’d like from my experience in beta anyway. Hopefully they’ll add a recall to ship button because right now making your way back is an extra 2-3 minutes of walking to accomplish nothing other than getting to your ship.
A minor downside but ya know, it is there.
