Question of the Day: Do You Care about Lightsaber Colors?

If you’re a regular visitor to the forums, you’ll rather frequently see threads pop up discussing the color of one’s Lightsaber blade. Judging from the responses these threads get, this is a pretty important topic to some people.

There are comments on purple Lightsabers, pink Lightsabers, speculation about black Lightsabers, and all manner of other colors. I once saw a thread discussing whether or not users of double bladed Lightsabers should be able to choose different colors for each blade. In case you’re wondering, the developers are allowing players to customize their Lightsabers, though the specifics and extent of these customizations (striped like a candy cane?) remains to be seen. As always, nothing is definite until launch.

I like the way his lightning matches his Lightsaber

So now it’s up to you: Do you care about the color of your Lightsaber blade? In the films, when the Jedi largely had blue or green Lightsabers, no one complained. However, they’ve expanded on the color palette for Jedi, and many folks thought it was cool. For Sith, there always has been just one color, blood red.  As of this point in development, the devs are allowing even a few variants to that iconic color.

Share you thoughts in the comments below: do you want as much variety as possible? Do you want only the classics – blue, green, and red? Do you feel like it matters? Speak your mind: we want to hear from you!

    Lightsaber color is paramount!!

    nuff said!

  2. PFunk says:

If the colour speaks to me then its right. In the numerous times I played KOTOR over and over I would try and vary my colour so as to avoid becoming one of those obnoxious types that self identifies with a colour… I mean sheesh thats lame.

However pre orders seems to have solved this problem for a lot of people. :P

  3. xCoronax says:

Yeah, pretty sure lightsaber color is something I really want. Between reading about all the crystals and such, would be something I want more for customization to feel like its MY character.

  4. Lars Hesselberg says:

While customization is important, I do think the colours should be specific on each faction. Blue, green maybe yellow for Jedis. Red, orange and purple for sith. Maybe switch yellow and purple but that’s it. And a double bladed lightsaber should be same colour.

  5. Drast_SL says:

As long as I can have my red saber (which I will be able to), I’m happy!

For while there, I was worried my Sith Inquisitor would be forced to use a purple saber. I loathe purple! LOOOOOOATHE!

  6. AvtronCertif says:

I feel like red should be darkside and sith only… blue/green should be lightside and jedi only… all other colors should be unrestricted. The more colors the better… I just don’t want stats on them

  7. Lightsaber colour is a must!

However there should be restrictions. Never has there been anything but solid colours (ie there has never been a multi-coloured and/or candy-cane striped lightsaber that I am aware of).

Also it’d would also make sense for even Sith to have “Jedi Colors” since a) they are able to take the lightsabers of fallen Jedi and b) there have been a lot of dark jedi that became sith.

There have been some Red Lightsabers for the Jedi, most notably Maris Brood who actually had 2.

As far as double-bladed Lightsabers, they have traditionally been one color on both blades… but did they have to use 2 crystals? I know a few double-bladed Lightsabers have actually been 2 locked together including Kas’im, the Blademaster that instructed Darth Bane. Which would lead one to assume there would have to be 2 crystals, so obviously 2 different colours would be possible.

  8. powerswg32 says:

Yes I think various lightsaber colors is a must. As much as I like things to be canon, I like that everyone isnt running around looking the same.

That said, no I do not want to see candy canes and such. I didnt even like the old “Lava crystal” (or carrot stick as i called it) from SWG. As long as it affects appearance only, choose any color in the rainbow. Just dont make it a rainbow colored love-bunny stick =)

  9. Amisha Smith says:

Of course it’s important to have variety in LS blade colors. Who would say no to that? lol

  10. Nora says:

I say the more options available to avoid the “everyone looks the same” the better! I hated seeing my toon everywhere when I played WoW.. I like variety!

  11. Rune says:

Yes and no. I’d like to be able to pick my own, and I’m not terribly concerned with canon.

  12. Antiopi says:

As far as story immersion, I’d love to be able to change my light saber color, in a way that reflects my character.

I’m a nerd so I’d love for their to be reasons behind each color XD

  13. Jared says:

I don’t think lightsaber color should be restricted. If it turns out it is, I think it should be based on alignment instead of faction. Seems like it could be pretty cool to have an evil Jedi sentinel dual-wielding two red sabers! As far as lore is concerned, go ahead and try to convince Darth Bane or Vader he can’t have a blue crystal if he so desires. I mean once you’re a ligtsaber wielding badass, it’s kinda up to you to pick your color, right? Restrictions would seem artificial and arbitrary to me, unless Lucas Arts says otherwise, citing specific lore. And, at the end of the day, this is game, a role-playing game to be specific, and being able to change your color fits into role-playing and just for the sake of enjoying customizing your character!

  14. Thock says:

This is already confirmed. Jedi of any alignment can use blue and green. Jedi of dark side alignment can use red.
for Sith all sith can use red regardless of alignment and light side sith will be able to use blue and green.

  15. Sean says:

What, like a moodsaber? (“I see your lightsaber blade is black. Would you like to talk about it?”)

  16. Afrogoth says:

I’m all for exhaustive color choices!

The way I see it, 3000 years before Darth Vader and the political stagnation of the Jedi, ancient lightsaber secrets must have been much more accessible. Many saber crystals along with hundreds of species must have existed that have since been lost, or forgotten within the sands of time.

Therefore, I expect The Old Republic to have a plentiful assortment of rare and common saber color choices that have since been lost to the Jedi and Sith for thousands of years.

The luxury of having a story so far removed from the trilogies is that it gives The Old Republic a lot of creative license to slowly explain why crystals were eventually eroded away to the standard blue, red, and green we see several millenniums later! It isnt bound so much by the rules, as it is bound to the obligation of arduously explaining (slowly, over the next 10+ years) how the rules of the trilogies came into being. :D

After my Smuggler, I’m rolling an unlikely male DARK Jedi with a deadly pink saber. Come Get Some! >:D

    Get Smug or Die!

  17. Obysxa says:

Yes Lightsaber color matters Period. This is a game whether Jedi is prominent. Do you think they said ah we will just have ever colors of blades and that is it. The Lightsaber is their weapon of choice, it’s hilt has more customizations than their is Jedi in the universe. I just wish that they let us Customize every aspect of the Lightsaber. That I can’t wait to see.

  18. Tevoy says:

There is one specific moment when you can see a Sith using a blue lightsaber on the movies, the rise of Darth Vader, but lost the saber (and most limbs) fighting against Obi-Wan.

Anyway I stick with the movies canon. Im going to personally use a blue saber on my Jedi Knight, if i change the color it will be probably purple, color only used by ONE Jedi in all the movies, Mace Windu (he agreed to make the movies if George Lucas gave him a unique color of saber so he’s mother could recognize him straight on big battles, and turned out that it worked on Genosis)

A Sith with a blue, green, purple or yellow lightsaber is not so scary, blood red fits them, and abomination color like “Lava Crystal” are to be left for abomination games of SW like Star Wars Galaxies.

  19. ZeroEdgeir says:

I hope there is some variance in the blade’s appearance. If you’ve played the Force Unleashed games, there is typically 3 colour gems per colour. 1 is the normal solid, 1 is “compressed” and makes the blade’s beam pulse, and 1 is “unstable” which causes the blade’s beam to I guess kind of distort and be more gaseous I guess? It’s a hard one to explain.

That would give some unique distinction outside of just colour.

  20. Nova says:

For me I really dont care about lightsaber colour. It can be colour of Fuxia what do I care. The only thing I care are stats.

    • Revan says:

You my friend fail , screw stats seriously if ivhad tp choose with a 25 Str yellow saber or a purple one with 2 Str
      Then purple it is bro

  21. Roq777 says:

I come at this from the other direction. I appreciate the need for a diverse range of colour options within the game. This makes sense from the pov that players need to feel they: 1. have lots to choose from, and 2. feel that over time, their gear is progressing.

As we’ve seen in other MMO’s, the standard is normally for weapons to become more outlandish and “epic” looking as upgrades become available. While I understand all this, speaking for myself, I hope it remains possible to have a standard looking Saber option for either faction despite the upgrade path. I prefer the understated menace of a pure red blade for my Jugg (well, as understated as you can be carrying a crimson laser sword of death!).

  22. Zulcatt says:

As long as I can have red for my sith warrior i’ll be a happy camper

  23. Emeka Uwazurike says:

I’m a green lightsaber kind of guy (Qui-Gon is the man!) But I fear that there will be incentive to use a color other than the one you plan for your jedi/sith. Like the pre-order color crystal that they say will have a special effect and have a gold core and black outlining light. It sounds cool, but if its going to have a special ability, wouldnt it be better if it was a crystal that allows you to pick the color? Otherwise we are going to see every single jedi running around with the same gold and black saber.

    • Afrogoth says:

I offers a vanity variation of early low-level saber while ensuring the crystal will likely be switched fairly quickly so as not to become underpowered. Makes sense to me. Bioware’s probably just making sure you willingly switch out yourrare CE Vanity Crystal to keep up with more advanced and powerful crystals.

    • Revan says:

No special effects maybe a tiny higher stat beacause its epic in beta it was +4 endurance
And the crystal you got is 2 endurance thats it maybe a tiny higher stat and the looks but no special power
Would be lame against the people tht did not pre orderd.
Bioware wants everything balanced thats why no benefitting racial abillty aswell
      Only some dances or taunts

  24. Sverrir says:

i say we should be able change the colour of our lightsaber. I don´t want to see all jedi knights running around with only blue or green lightsabers but i certenly don´t want to see jedi´s running around with red sabers and a sith running around with blue or green sabers since those colours are iconic for each side. I say blue and green should be jedi only and red be sith only, purple both and rest both.

  25. Sith1 says:

    Sith main should be red
Jedi main color should be blue.

Rest of the colors are up for grabs by either side.

No rainbow color. No different colors for double blade. Too tacky.

I am happy we have gold as lightsaber color game. Glad Pre-orders get the color.

  26. Maarkean says:

Absolutely. I enjoy being able to switch saber colors and have done so with regularity in all games that have lightsabers (Jedi Knight, Force Unleashed, SWG). My favorite is Mace’s purple, but I like some blue and green too. Not a real fan of some of the weird variations though (like the lava crystal from SWG, that was just dumb).

  27. darth something says:

Yes. It is important. The lightsaber is your weapon, you get to customize it to how you want it to be, that means colour as well.

personally, I’d like to have a bright luminous Yellow colour – like a bright shining star…or maybe a somewhat darker blue than the standard blue you get

  28. ZeroEdgeir says:

Where is the info that says the Colour Crystal for the pre-orders is a set colour? From what I understood is it would give you more freedom in changing your colour of Lightsaber (and Blaster Bolts for the non-Force Sensitives) to a select pool of colours. If it is just gonna be gold, not quite so impressive, well, not for the first few weeks. About a month or two in, you can stand out with it as many people will forget about it or get bored of it.

For me, at least as a Jedi, it would have to be silver. Calm, logical, patient.

As a Sith, while I known red is the iconic (and is a favourite colour of mine being a Mario fan for 23 years), I would actually like to go with a bronze. It seems to me to be far more unstable, violent, and wild.

From what the videos have shown, it seems by default the Jedi Knights get blue, Consulars get green (very traditional there). Sith Warriors get red, and Sith Inquisitors get purple (red is obvious, the purple kinda makes sense with all their Force Lightning being purple too).

  29. OH EM GEE says:

I love the thought of changing saber colors just for the simple fact that I am a very visual person. Having a variety is key for me.

  30. dat guy says:

allignment is definitly the way to go, but I would like to dual wield a blue and purple saber. if it looked good on kotor it will look good on tor

  31. Riek says:

I definitely care about lightsaber colours, it’s that extra bit of customization that you have control over for one. Plus who hasn’t geeked out thinking about their own personal lightsaber? Being able to choose your own colour is one step toward that fantasy right? ;)

With that said, I believe that BioWare will likely restrict colours to factions/alignments. I don’t agree with it but I can see the reasoning.

  32. Lord-Maknoe says:

I think there should be color restrictions, to a point. Like for example a jedi can’t use a red lightsaber, but can still use like purple and yellow. As for a sith can’t use blue or green, but can still use pink and orange. These are just small examples of the many variations there could be. But that is my opinion on it

  33. cpltickie says:

I think you should have a choice on colors. You should start out with the traditional colors of each class, but be able to obtain other colors on your journeys.

  34. Ragnos says:

I think it is really taking away a big element in the Star Wars universe giving players the chance to have the enemies lightsaber colour. It is very important to me and I hope most Sith still use red and most Jedi use any colour other than red. It is the distinction between Jedi and Sith if we ruin that they might as well be on the same side

  35. Revenant says:

Though that color restriction was pretty iconic in the first trilogy, several sith have used green or blue sabers (such as Exar Kun) and I know of several Jedi that have used red lightsabers (like A’Sharad Hett and Kyp Durron)

The aggressive versus passive colors are in not always indicative of alignment, so I don’t think any restriction should be set.
