The Corellian Construction Zone: The Importance of Personality in Role Playing

When I role play, I imagine myself as an an evil Italian plumber, who also happens to rule the galaxy with an iron fist.

If you’re a regular reader of TORWars, you’ll be familiar with our Corellian Construction Zone feature. Is it too late to send bios? I think I just fleshed out (and simplified) my character just enough.

After reading all of these articles, i came to realize something about role-playing (no i do not have any training in this). In other RPG’s (Not MMORPG’s), at least the older one’s like before KOTOR; The Game Dev’s have had to create a character, without creating a character. Meaning, they have to create a framework of personality, (using the game elements, usually having the character make some decisions instead of the player).Certain Game elements will make the player think generally about his/her character. So they know he’s generally outgoing, or greedy, or very brave… This reference doesn’t point out specifics, so it doesn’t tell the player how to play a Brave, occasionally murderous, hero . It makes the Player Harness the brave, occasionally murderous, heroic, Trooper part of him. So the player, throughout the game, is harnessing this part of himself/herself. The Character becomes an extension of the player, allowing immersion.

(Sorry about the length there, i think I’m ranting now) The SWTOR Dev’s have done about 1/4 (I guessed there) the work, they do point to particular personality traits based off of the class you choose. But not to the level that RPG’s do. (They’re supposed to it’s part of the game, so you can make your own character)And obviously you have your own ideas what it means to be republic or empire.

So by creating a character like these articles say, your essentially creating a guide to how to develop Your character. You will develop a personal attachment to this character and you eventually won’t need your guide. As the character develops in your mind you will eventually ,make decisions on your own. You Don’t have to nail specific personality traits, it will come with time.
