PC Gamer: Fancy New SWTOR Game Preview

PC Gamer has a new write-up previewing BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic which describes writer Tim Edward’s experience while playing a Smuggler through Ord Mantell and other areas.

As the game gets closer and closer to release, those of us unlucky enough to simply be taunted with Beta Test e-mails will continue to eagerly grasp at the persistent amount of reviews, hands-on reports, and previews that will continue to tumble down the Internet.

Smugglers have no problem fitting in.

A couple of points of interest: Edwards notes the wide variety of options via the Character Creation screen, which is always a plus to me – as variety is key. He also makes note of how he is able, from the Smuggler starting area, to take advantage of collecting commendations to trade in for a ‘Blue’ or rare item as early as level 9.

Another added point of interest is the writer’s statement that you will easily find yourself dealing with more mobs than you may be used too from other popular MMOs like World of Warcraft. The preview also dives into player conversation and story moments. Here’s an excerpt:

If you’re about to have a story moment, you’ll pass through a glowing green forcefield – creating a separate instance of the game for you and your party. In there, you might fight a baddie, or talk to an NPC, but you’ll do it isolated from other players. All quests are introduced by dialogue and a cutscene, and when you’re talking to a quest-giver, the rest of the world will see a little speech bubble over your head.”

The write-up certainly has spoilers regarding the Smuggler’s story, so you may want to avoid it if that bothers you. Other than that, it’s a great read and gives you a peek in SWTOR and overall, PC Gamer seems pretty impressed with the title so far.

Variation is definitely key. RIFT actually did a good job of allowing tremendous character customization, as well as having blue items available for rewards from level 5-6 or basically as soon as you were out of the starting zone. It worked very well, in my opinion, although it took me a while to figure out that each zone had a major settlement where these badge and item vendors were, in addition to some in the capital city, and a ton of PVP vendors. So I’m very pleased both these things made it in.

Anyway, it seems to me that Bioware is doing a great job at taking some of the best traits from other MMORPGs. Some might call this cloning and copying, but there is no need to reinvent the wheel. I prefer to think of it simply as the evolution of MMORPGs. Let’s not forget that the games SWTOR borrows from have themselves borrowed equally from those MMORPGs that went before.
