Gamesradar has a new video interview up with BioWare’s lead writer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, Daniel Erickson. The interview covers a wide range of topics such as Erickson’s position as lead writer for SWTOR, server stability at launch, the possibility of using a BioWare IP for an MMO, SWTOR’s character dialogue and voice-actor casting, and a slew of other topics.
Mr. Erickson is his usual chatty and charismatic self, showing off his passion for writing and working on SWTOR. There is also a particularly interesting point of discussion addressing where each class stands in terms of morality and why some characters have ‘darker’ or more evil dialogue options then others at the beginning of their particular class storyline.
Daniel also confirms that there will be no discussion of midi-chlorians in SWTOR; so any fans not happy with the explained reasoning behind the Force in the Prequel Star Wars Trilogy can put their fears to rest on that topic, at least in regards to SWTOR.
It’s well worth the watch, sitting at about 7 minutes and packed with in-game footage and SWTOR discussion. You can check out the video below! Happy Holidays, TORWarriors!

Okay, I’m really getting tired of people saying that midichlorians are the “reasoning behind the Force.” They’re the reasoning behind how people USE the Force. As in they’re just the middleman; the Force itself is still completely mysterious and unexplained. I don’t mind people hating on midichlorians, but they at least need to know what exactly they are/do first.
The thing is – all the movie says is that they exist, and they’re the reason people can use the force.
This whole thing about them being the middleman? Complete fabrication. Fan justification – if it isn’t made clear in the movie, it should’ve been. I don’t even care if George Lucas said it after the fact; it shouldn’t require looking to a second source to figure out.
So part of the reason people get angry is a) because it was communicated in a way that makes it seem totally mechanical and stupid, and b) because it wrecks the mysticism with pseudo-science. It’s a bit like that brain machine Professor Persinger has rigged up that lets you feel a mystical experience by stimulating certain sections of your brain with electromagnetism.
If you read the Wookieepedia page on midi-chlorians, you’d find that you are the one completely fabricating things.
“When present in sufficient numbers, they could allow their symbiont to detect the pervasive energy field known as the Force.”
In other words, they’re the middle man. Even read the behind-the-scenes section at the bottom of the page. George Lucas envisioned them as early as ’77, and considers them different from the ‘mysticism’ of the Force.
Also, one has to remember that this information came from Qui’gon Jin (not sure if that’s spelled right) who was considered a heretic of the order during his stay and refused to be given a spot on the Master’s Council due to his unorthodox beliefs.
Very good interview, I really like the questions asked.
Good job.
wish the interview was longer. hearing this behind the scenes stuff is fascinating.
Daniel Erickson is a pretty epic guy I must say
Absolutely
The people mad about the casual explanation of midichlorians by Lucas are probably the same people who whine about science “ruining” the mysticism of their “god” or whatever you want to call it.
While I’m not going to comment on that specficially, I would like to point out just for fun that the concept/entity of Brahman in Hinduism shares quite a few similarities with the Force.
I wouldn’t be surprised. Did you know that the word for “sage soldier” in Hindi is “yoddha”?
Just dove right into this video and the interview topic, as a Game Art/Design student i love anything about the development process =)
I think it’s interesting to note that he says the existence of medichlorians hasnt been discovered yet. What this means is he is not saying in this version of star wars they dont exist or hes not retconning them, but they arent mentioned simply because the research into unlocking that secret of the force hasnt been done yet.
no no no
he wants to leave midi-chlorians out due to a huge number of fans being angry they were introduced…..
Yes and DE also said that the sith race will not be able to play sith inquisitor (he fought for a while against it too). Ive learned DE says many things but higher ups always seem to override him. Hope he makes a lot of money cause I wouldnt take all those chops to the nuts that he keeps accepting.
