Game Informer‘s Adam Biessener has a tip for all of us so that we may “conquer” Star Wars: The Old Republic and rule the universe. What’s the magic sauce that’s going to help us achieve that goal? Re-mapping our keybindings, that’s what!
Game Informer says, like all MMOS, TOR’s keybindings leave much to be desired. You’re going to need to change and move those default puppies around in order to dominate and win. Here’s your winning lotto configuration: 1,2,3,4,W,E,R,F,Z,X,C,V. Make sense? If not, head over for the low down – and enjoy pwning SWTOR!
Game Informer Quote:
“Like all MMOs, Star Wars: The Old Republic has unbelievably terrible default keybindings. Stave off repetitive stress injuries and dramatically improve your reaction times in the game by learning from this sage keybinding advice.
The biggest problem, which every hotkey-based game has fallen prey to, is that moving your left hand* to the other side of the keyboard in the middle of combat is cumbersome and imprecise. Since The Old Republic expects players to cycle through 10-14 abilities in the most basic combats, this is a constant issue past level six or so…
The simple solution is to re-map your ability hotkeys to the left side of the keyboard. This will make a huge difference in your ability to quickly and easily activate any and all of your abilities without having to look down at the keyboard or move your hand away from its natural position.”

Key binding is very important, although I use a slightly different pattern.
1,2,3,4,q,w,e,r,a,s,d,f
Once these slots are prioritized, I then continue and redo the pattern with the addition of the “ALT” key (alt-1,2,3,4 etc). Its seems to work for me.
I just wish I could break this blasted clicker habit. I have a gaming keyboard and still click! Argh!
Cant go back after getting a Naga razor mouse! 12 key number pad on thumb position
Gotta agree with that one! Razer Naga has made me a REAL mmo gamer!
Best Christmas gift EVER!
Im also a clicker and after playing WOW for 6 years dont think ill break the habit any time soon althou Im very tempted to get a naga to maybe help but time will tell
Razer Naga ftw! 12 buttons on the mouse + Hotkey remap = Win!
I have a Logitech G13 gamepad. Up to75 keys for binding and a thumb joystick to boot. Hmm I should get a gaming mouse soon. But my old 518 serves me well ATM.
Belkin N52TE + Razer Naga = Keybindings Galore
Been using this setup for over year throughout all my games. Really nice to have all main rotation and situational abilities only a small thumb stretch away!
I wish we had more lefty mice options. In the meantime, I have my number pad remapped to my most used skills and it works very nicely and the movement keys on the up/down/left/right arrow keys.
These keybindings really make no sense to me. As someone who’s almost always played on a laptop without an external mouse (real handicap, I know), I’ve always preferred to keep the movement keys as they are and bind the crap out of the right side of my keyboard. I’m talkin’ from the basic binds all the way down to comma and period. For the ones that normally have UI functions mapped to them, I just bind that to a shift-combo of the same letter (i.e. shift-p opens my abilities frame). All my offensive abilities are within quick reach of my right hand while healing and defensive abilities sit around my left hand, as they’ll presumably be more useful in situations where I can afford to remove a finger from a movement key for half a second to hit them. So far, my setup is treating me pretty well. I’m a regular chart topper in warzones and I was a regular chart topper in battlegrounds in WoW.
I do the same, however I move the movement keys to esdf and use a few keys around it for movement spells, stealth, and things of that nature.
G9+G13+G15. Give me a Key and I’ll bind to A G-Key.
I have never been good with keybinds at all. I’m just not that coordinated for some reason. I type fast, but I tend to make a lot of mistakes, so when I’m playing games that use the keyboard for keybinds, I tend to hit the wrong key ALOT. I used to have a Naga, but it broke, and now I’m feeling the difference. I HATE using the keyboard, and I can’t wait until I can afford to get a new Naga.
But since I have to use the keyboard now, I prefer to use W A S D for movement, and everything else bound to 1 2 3 4 5 6 Q E R T F G. 1-6 is normally reserved for my basic rotation, while Q E R T F G are for my cooldowns and abilities I need in a pinch or clutch situation.
Keybind 6 can be a problem, as it is much farther away from my fingers than I would like and at an odd angle. To compensate, I usually put the ability I use the least on keybind 6. I also use ~ for abilities like Stealth and Charge. If I need more keys I use Shift as a modifier.
