Legacy System: What Are You Expecting?

From patch 1.2 onwards a flurry of Legacy System updates will be coming our way steadily throughout Star Wars: The Old Republic’s life. It’s a pretty secret affair as of yet; there’s a few hints here and there, but nothing solid for us to sink our teeth into.

So, let’s get our speculating hats out and start stroking our beards! I’ll gloss over the stuff you probably already know of, such as the whole ‘family’ aspect and the restraints of that. But, there’s a few things you probably don’t know! For example, in an interview with James Ohlen, G4TV claim that you can unlock abilities, perks and “bind on Legacy items”. Now that is curious! Bindable legacy items you say? Now that’s interesting.

"That is curious...."

What could these items be? Speeders? Weapons? Armor? I’m hoping that it means social and PvP armor. Because whilst I haven’t even got past Social I yet, I can imagine that those that like the social armors aren’t looking forward to going through the whole social point farm all over again. And the same goes for PvP ranks, hitting Battlemaster once is a bit of a grind, hitting it multiple times is a bit of a nightmare. And, on a personal note, I’m hoping that getting all the datacrons carries across your legacy. Or, at least, just the stats that mean something for the actual class – or even just the Endurance ones.

As the G4TV article goes on, Mr Ohlen let loose that the legacy system works in the way of ‘legacy points’ that are spent on the perks and so on. According to Ohlen, these points can be spent in such a way that it will allow an alt to learn the speeder piloting ability sooner than the current level 25 benchmark. Therefore allowing you to traverse worlds sooner and faster. To take it further, it might be wise to suggest that this means you can also learn the level three speeder ability sooner, allowing you to travel at maximum speed a lot sooner than before.

Apparently, even the way XP is earned can be altered. Ohlen says you will be able to customize how alts get XP in such a way that they can get more XP from PvP’ing. Again, to take it further, it could also mean the reverse, allowing you to get more XP from PvE or group content.

There will also be ‘attacks’ that can be learnt from the legacy too. ‘Attacks’ is a bit of a wide term, so I’m going to suggest that there will be defensive ‘attacks’ too. It’s a bit a strange concept to grasp when it’s being kept secret. What ‘attacks’ will be balanced? What will they even be? The best understanding/interpretation I can haphazardly throw together is that it will depend on the class, and the advanced class.

After consulting the mystics, this was the best I could come up with.

For example, my main is a tank; so it could well be that through the legacy I might give a buff of some kind that can be activated to give an alt a defensive boost for a period of time, which then triggers its cool down. I also have a gunslinger, could this give me a buff to increase my range by a small amount for a short period of time? Or give me a surge/critical boost? I’m thinking in the ways of buffs because I can’t imagine a true ‘attack’ that wouldn’t look silly.

But what are your thoughts? What are you expecting from the legacy system update? And, what would you like to see?

I just want to be able to roll different races for the other classes.. like twi’lek sith warrior or mirialan bounty hunter ..something like that =P

  2. DarkSun says:

I agree. I wish I could roll all 8 classes as Chiss. That way, my legacy name would make sense.

  3. Praemorior says:

How about an option that gives more xp from class quests. This would be good for the people who don’t like PvP or for someone like me who just wants to see all the class stories but nothing else on alts.

  4. Scoricaemz says:

Based on what I’ve read, I assume that it will allow you to make an alt that is the same species as whatever your previous character was, regardless of class. So if you made, for example, a Chiss Imp. Agent, then you could then make a chiss Jedi Knight, or whatever. If they are going to allow you to create a familial relationship, then that only makes sense.

The key to making this Legacy system work is to ensure the features that are unlocked are significant enough to drive people towards “leveling” their account. I expect some features to help alts level faster (increased XP, shorter cd on Fleet Pass/Quick Travel), but maybe a few other things as well.

Hopefully new races become unlocked since the current race options are sorely lacking, along with other smaller features to customize your character. Reducing money sink costs (speeder training, repairs, removing mods) would be another significant enough feature to motivate people. Profession boni, such as an increased recipe discovery rate or a reduced number of crafting mats required would be HUGE.

I’m rambling here, but anything above would be fantastic in my opinion. Personally, the reduced XP for alts or all-in-all brand new races would be my preference.

What I’m not going to try to speculate on specific features, I will say that any unlockables that would be usable on existing characters will likely unlock for said existing characters as well as new ones. Otherwise they’d be hosing anyone who made all their alts already.

  7. Cindy says:

After reading The Old Republic comics on Darkhorse digital about Zayne Carrick, I REALLY want to be an Arkanian.

I doubt it will happen but it would be fantastic. Otherwise I’m just curious to see what other customising features we get. New hairstyles? I’m always looking for new hair… :)

I hope they implement something that allows use of your legacy on other servers ‘if you choose’. I have 3lvl 50′s already. They are not super geared I just love seeing a character grow and become more powerful. Then at 50 its all about gear, and I just like the leveling. So I hope that they implement an option for me to pass my legacy to another server.

  9. Jack says:

sith lightning for my warrior plz

  10. Toothpaste says:

My Legacy surname is Toothpaste, and it makes sense with all of my characters, especially my smuggler, Captain Colgate Toothpaste

  11. Bhakra says:

How bout a move that removes caster shields??? It’s ok, I’ll just bubble and…..oh #%@%

  12. [shortbus] says:

I really wish they would fix all the game-breaking shit. Fuck the Legacy System.

  13. Accish says:

I would like to see the following: Transport to ship option and the Crew should be able to function as a mailbox. Additionally it would be really great if 1 char from the legacy family could borrow an ability from another legacy char.

  14. TK7223 says:

Addtitional avatar customizations, Ship customizations(paint schemes, name plates), Guild or Legacy crests that can be applied to armor, the list goes on….

  15. _Flin_ says:

Something like additional crafting possibilities might be nice.

    - Spending Legacy Points to add characters to a central crafting roster.
    - Legacy Bank
    - Legacy only crafting items (Bind to Legacy on Pickup) that change armortype and level.

Or generally a change from “Bind on Pickup” to “Bind to Legacy”.
That way one might get a full set of armorings/barrels/Hilts – and especially augments and enhancements – for every levelrange and reuse them.

Furthermore I’d like to give every toon who is in a parental role the possibility to have an “I am your father” emote with sound.

  16. Vapour says:

Heirloom items like in that other game would be cool. Something that scales with level and provides added xp bonuses. I sure hope it’s retroactive, since i already have a lvl 50 and 3 others all around their mid 20′s.

  17. baldylox says:

only issue with all of this….what if you have 3-4 alts already leveled because the game is so quick and easy? based on speculation, if i wanted a familial group based of my main character, then im screwed at the moment and I don’t want to level any more characters. so there had better be some sort of race/visual change ability.

  18. Sylin says:

No offense, but I take issue with the way this article is written. It supposes much, with absolutely no factual data to back it up. Anthony, this is how FUD gets spread, so it “might be wise” to add some disclaimers up there on what has been confirmed and what is simply your Wish List. :)

Just because Bioware has said they will offer X perk for Legacy points, doesn’t automatically mean perks Y and Z will follow.

That said, I do hope datacrons carry over with the Legacy. Some of those are a pain to get once–don’t care to repeat it.

Secondly, for people who say, “What happens if I already leveled 7 alts and now I can’t take advantage of all the Legacy perks on my server?” To you I say (1) you were TOLD it was coming and CHOSE to level the alts anyway, and (2) if you’re so good at leveling alts, roll one on a different server and make a new Legacy.

  19. Tahllon says:

I want the ability to faction change one max level character while keeping the skills and proficiencies of the base class (imperial dual wielding gunslinger). For a HUGE legacy points cost. Once per account.

  20. Salmonleap says:

What I expect: Twi’leiks all round. Because there aren’t enough Twi’leiks to satisfy the Twi’leik fetishists.

What I want: More character slots.

  21. Void says:

I hope that the legacy system will have a feature that would let you have 2 companions out at 1 time. Yes i know its unlikely but i still have hope.
Also, I hope that sooner or later, does not have to be patch 1.2 or patch 1.3, but sooner or later they release race quests that will teach you about the race you are playing.

  22. TheElf says:

Legacy can have bonuses you might enjoy for roleplaying. If your bunch of alts is considered a family, and there is a “peace treaty” between Empire and Republic it would make sense to have some “cross faction mail” functionality between characters. It would be a nice perk for some.

I would add legacy that links us to the force. Hey, if you are pretty close to maxing out light side maybe a few extra Light Side options would make sense.

On the other hand: Even if your character doesn’t have “relatives on planets ruled by the enemy” you won’t want cross realm abilities, but you would want to have 8 characters, one for each advanced class on same faction, and would prefer alterations to how class storyline works.

Say you found your legacy with a Sith Inquisitor, who takes Sith code to her heart, but knows “Passion” isn’t about fear and hate, strength can be knowledge, and true victory is achieved through superiority. Yes, even superiority in a debate. Hey, she even knows what kind of freedom it is about. So she is a seeker, she loves challenge, she loves when things evolve around her. But she is a good person and her strength (which surprised many other Sith) came from Light Side too.

Wouldn’t it make sense, if an Imperial Agent would become part of her power base? With different, more Light Side missions, more Light Side choices and all?

Such alternate storylines, maybe with more character slots could make sense from RP perspective. And I am sure that my SI can have both family and friends on Republic side.

For yet others, companion sharing between characters would make more sense. After all, sending your companions to help a relative is a logical mission.

  23. Ajunta says:

Sith Jedi Knight …. that is all

  24. Delbane says:

Ok a lo of speculation going on here, but be a bit careful speculating too much on races, I for one think that the game has to stay true to the IP of Lucas Arts, and this means that a race such as the Chiss, which has it clearly stated in their lore, that they are unknown to the repubic, would make for poor jedi knights or any other republic class for that matter.

That aside I have seen a lot of speculation on brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers, what is the problem with having different racial characters, it would be likely that there are other ways to define relation ships between characters, other than a straight blood line.

As for perks and abilities, the one thing I would like to see the most here is an ability/perk which allows you to at least mail your ‘other side’ characters, generally you can not do this, but doesn’t relationships between characters indicate that they know each other or at least know of eachother, a distant cousin is still a cousin even if she is living on mars.
