Jesse Sky, Lead Flashpoints and Operations Designer released a Developer Blog today outlining some more information on the upcoming Galactic Reputation System coming in Game Update 1.7.
Posted by BioWare
Game Update 1.7 will introduce Galactic Reputation to all players. This is a new way for your character to advance in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. In a time of widespread conflict and political strife, disparate organizations throughout the galaxy seek allies in the struggle for peace… or conquest. Reputation measures how your character is perceived by these organizations it reflects the prestige you’ve earned through your heroic contributions to each cause.
The Reputation track for each organization is divided into six ranks – Outsider, Newcomer, Friend, Hero, Champion, and Legend. You will start with no rank at all, but as you earn Reputation Points, your rank will increase. When you’ve earned the top rank in a particular organization (i.e. Legend), you will no longer earn Reputation Points with that particular organization. You will have become a living legend among those represented by that organization; an avatar of their cause.
As your Reputation Rank increases, new rewards will become available to you. Throughout the galaxy, you will find Reputation Vendors associated with each organization. Special rewards with Reputation Rank requirements can be purchased from these vendors. Items and equipment with a Reputation Rank requirement can only be purchased, used, or equipped if you meet or exceed the rank requirement.
So while this system does take a fairly safe approach to a known system from past MMO’s, the obvious perk is that all reputation points gained are gained legacy wide, reducing the need to grind out reputations on all characters, which most players will see as a nice change.
This is a fairly in depth Developer Blog, I suggest you all give it a good reading. There are a lot of great details and screenshots explaining the whole system. Check it out here!

im happy with it. keep it coming bioware!
It looks as though you gain points for one of the factions (Imperial First Mobile Fleet / Republic Hyperspace Armada) by completing HM space missions. I know that everything isn’t for everyone (and space missions are just kind of ‘eh’ for me), but the completionist in me knows that I need to get my hands on some Grade 7 ship parts and start watching Brian’s video walkthroughs.
They called the character slagrida which, being from the UK, I find very funny
Not a lot of organizations to start with, that’s for sure. And none of them are an overall “Republic/Empire,” which would have seemed like a no-brainer.
I was also hoping you’d be able to get reputation from leveling missions, but that would make far too much sense.
Looks like they are adding incentives to do the planetary heroic missions.I like that.
I am for the most part looking forward to this. It seems it’s different then what I was expecting.
They are (it would seem) only having a few factions available to gain rep with at release, which may just be them testing out the waters first but doubtful.
Then it also seems that you can only gain rep from certain quests, heroics it would seem. Which on the up side it gives added incentive for people to do heroics & group up to do them which most solo players skip them but now they might have to reevaluate their decision. However I was kind of hoping that all quests gave rep since technically you are doing quests for them which like someone pointed out already makes a lot of sense. I guess I can see why they made it the way they did if they are trying to entice people to do the heroics more.
